Welcome to the Durning House
Open Year Round
Charles Durning came to Texas after the Civil War as
a young man following his dream. He settled outside
Van Alstyne and made his living hauling freight from
Jefferson to this part of north Texas. This house
was made from lumber he hauled sometime around the
turn of the century. "Granny" Durning loved
having company and entertained many neighbors and
friends through the years. It is fitting that
the house still beckons neighbors and friends with
the warmth of yesteryear. "Granny" is probably
still watching over her home.
The Bed & Breakfasts are open year round. A
deposit is required with the reservation either by
check or credit card. The Restaurant is open
for lunch Monday-Friday 11:00-2:00. We no
longer serve dinner on Friday or Saturday nights
except for special occasions.
Owners of The Durning House, Brenda Hix and Sherry
Heath, first opened their doors in July 1989 with
the Main House. The restaurant followed Feb. 14,
1990. Then demand resulted in the construction of
the Sunday House in 1995.
Landscaping is a priority here. We boast 3 white
dessert willows from Benny Simpson himself. We love
old fashioned plants and unusual ones. The total
package of good food, good lodging, and good
surroundings make for a memorable stay. An
experience that pleases you is our goal.
